I completed this design with my ipad while on the plane ride to and from Florida a few weeks ago. I listen to a heavy amount of dancehall, so that was the inspiration for this piece. I also created the gangster font using a recently acquired app that allows you to render custom alphabets. Badass.

Here's the first promo design I did for the shop. Karlis the owner gave me a sketch of a bugged out mantis he drew and I completed it digitally. An spoof of one of our favorite movies, Menace To Society
I also tattooed this skull on him, which he gave me a rough sketch to start with and let me finish the design how I saw fit. He rides bmx and had his front two teeth knocked out so that explains the gear and missing teeth. We threw the paint brush and tattoo needle in the mix to represent his love for art. Now I can't wait to get my tattoo from him...

Fokis/Atomik Graf Production...

I've found some photos on google of a wall that Fokis LTS and I had done about 12 years ago in Charlotte, NC. Fokis is from Cali, and we met while he was visiting NC and I was visiting from Pittsburgh. We quickly became good friends and had a great time hanging out and painting together. His style influenced me a lot, and I'm grateful for having the opportunity to destroy some walls with him!
I don't know who took these photos, or why, but they show us in the process of painting a graveyard scene production. I remember Fokis telling me that we had to paint our pieces huge, and it was so out of my normal style because where I grew up we learned to paint on a smaller scale. Whoever took these photos blurred out our faces, which I think is funny, but anyways, I appreciate them posting these pics!
This is a mixed medea piece that Fokis gave me when I left Charlotte, and will always be one of my favorites. We had a rad time hanging out, and have lots of stories from that short amount of time. I hope to hang out with him again sometime soon

This memorial tattoo was for a guy who told me the elements that he wanted to incorporate in the design, and let me arrange it how I saw fit. The result is a decent tatty that remembers his family members nicely.

California Road Trip Part Four- "Street Cred" and "Art in the Streets"

We attended two graf/street art gallery shows. First was the "Street Cred" exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. The entire exterior of the building was covered with Retna's lettering. Inside, photography was prohibited, but I snuck a pic of this Risky piece that was composed of license plates and neon and titled "styles for miles"
The "Art in the Streets" show at the MOCA in Los Angeles was absolutely badass!

Risky's bus was parked outside the entrance.

The wall of spray cans brought back a lot of memories...
...as did these two Powell boards. The ripper on the left was my first real board. I bought it at a small skate shop in Manhattan Beach when I was about 12. Up until then, I was riding shitty Kmart boards.

We fell in love with the cities and towns we found along the coast such as San Louis Obispo and Santa Barbara. And we were amazed by the scenic cliffs and rocky beaches we drove on in places like Big Sur.

Haunted Schoolhouse Paranormal Investigation Photo Shoot...

My good friend TJ of the 'Western Pennsylvania Paranormal Investigators' leads his team of supernatural detectives on hunts for ghosts and spirits all over PA and the east coast. I've had an open invitation to join him on one of his searches for proof of the afterlife, and I finally took him up on the offer. I thought it would be a cool place to shoot some photos and learn something about ghost hunting. I met him at an old schoolhouse that had a history of paranormal sightings and unexplained happenings. Exploring the decaying building reminded me of my youth spent exploring old warehouses for chill graffiti spots to paint. I got some nice photos, despite there being very little light to work with. We didn't see any specters, but TJ's electronic recording device did pick up some interesting sounds and voices.

There are plenty of hidden meanings and messages within, but I never explain my artwork, I'd rather allow the viewer to come to their own conclusions.

My very good friend Mike came in the shop to get a dagger on his forearm that held a personal message and meaning for himself. I've always digged dagger tattoos, probly because I was obsessed with the VCJ artwork that decorated Powell Peralta skate decks back in the 80's. His dagger designed for the Tommy Guerrero board was wicked. That design was part inspiration for this tattoo in that they both have skulls on the handle. Thanks again Mike, your a great friend, and a great person who allows me to do sick tattoos on!

Pinstriping in Little Rock, AK...

This past weekend I traveled to Little Rock to take part in a custom paint and pinstriping event held at the annual Auto Extravaganza. I was in good company with Spider Papa, Paul Quinn, Zeke Lemanski, and Howie Nisgor.

This lil lucky Buddah went on the back of this kid's neck. I enjoyed doing this one...fat people are fun to shade.
And finally, this symbolic family tree went on a young girl who's always a great person to tattoo and hang out with while she's at the shop. She always gets cool and colorful tattoos and gives me the artistic freedom I need to create great work. Everything involved in this tattoo holds meaning and represents members of her family. It was a challenge to design, but the end result is something that both of us are very proud of!

It's been a good week for photos! All of these were taken in the past few days, and are some of my favorite ever because of the colors. The image above was captured while attending the Girl Talk show in Pittsburgh. I've been wanting to see him perform for a long time, and the show exceeded all of my expectations! Sooooo good!
The photos above and below were the result of me fooling with the camera. I really like them a lot. I'm a huge fan of color, and these two are a beautiful blend of designs and colors.

And these guys here are from my friends fish tank. Puff fish are my favorite kind of fish, so I'm always very happy to see this guy! He's actually fairly big, about the size of a shoe. I am sure he gets much bigger when he puffs up! His little orange buddy to the left felt that he needed to be in the photo too

Mike, who's a really nice kid, came in for his second tattoo by me. He recently joined the Army, and his first tattoo was a skull wearing a beret with crossed M4s. He was being shipped off to war in a few days, and decided to get St. Michael, the Angel of Protection, inked on his forearm. He was very happy with the finished piece as was I. "Live, Laugh, Love" Tattoo...

This girl came in for a variation of a popular tattoo on her side. She wanted her favorite flowers to be mixed in with her favorite quote, and she wanted it BIG! I had all ready done one small tattoo on her, so this was a huge step up in size and pain factor! She sat great, and the final product reflects what happens when you combine a good idea, with talent, and someone who is willing to endure a good bit of pain for something they really desire.
And this woman wanted to reproduce an image from a Christmas greeting card she was fond of. Its of a hound hunting a stuffed animal, and is one of the more un-ordinary tattoos that I've done in a while!

Fighter Tattoos...

I recently had some fellas come in the shop who like to fight. The kid above is a mixed martial arts fighter, and wanted the seven deadly sins tattooed down his back. We did it in one sitting, which is a testament to his pain tolerance, because the only other tattoo he had was a relatively small one on his arm. It's always fun getting the opportunity to tattoo someone who has a really interesting job or hobby, and I enjoyed hearing fight stories for most of the session. He was a really, really nice kid too!
My man pictured above is training to be a boxer, and came in for his second tattoo from me. The first was a tribute to the city of Philadelphia. Also a really great guy, and I always enjoy talking to him. If I were to become a boxer, I'd want to do it in Philly too...home of Rocky, right?!

Sticker Art...

I LOVE stickers. As far back as I can remember, I've always collected them. And when I was old enough, I started creating my own. I have hand drawn them, screen printed them, stamped them, relief printed them, stenciled them, and hand drawn them. I almost always have a stack in my pocket ready to put up. I've never taken photos of my stickers I had stuck up, but over the years I have found some pics posted on flickr and google image search of my stickers, and I saved those. Besides, I think it looks more interesting when the sticker is worn and weathered. I guess somebody liked them enough to photograph them.

The sticker in the photo above was created by taking a picture of myself in my bathroom mirror, then carving that image into a block and rolling ink over it to make a relief print. I did a few designs with this method. One featured a pic of my at-the-time girlfriends face, one was of a skull, and another was of Agent Smith from the Matrix. These yellow stickers above were part of a sticker art show some years back. Standard old school graffiti character. I did a few more in this style, but don't have any photos of them
The brown and black stickers that have the bobcat image on them and read ARMY were created by me. I don't even remember the why I chose that image or the meaning behind it, but I remember we put up A LOT of those.
The sticker in the top left corner was mine also. A good friend and I made some "Dave Thomas Has a Posse" stickers after Dave, (the founder of Wendy's Hamburgers) had passed away.

This sticker with a skull wearing a sombrero was part of a set that all incorporated skulls wearing different hats. There was also a pirate skull, a nazi skull, and a shriner skull.
The stickers pictured above and below were created with spray paint and a hand cut stencil. This image is of a dead Laura Palmer from "Twin Peaks"

This young girl came in the shop to get her first tattoo. She wanted something to honor her grandfather and likes praying hands so we came up with this design.

I always say that three things that make a good first tattoo are religious images, family themes designs, and (if your a guy) pinup girl designs. The girl above got two out of three...no bad!

Another great friend of mine wanted me to grace his arm with his first tattoo while visiting his town last week. He was interested in a cross with skulls worked into the design, and this is what I came up with. He really likes all of those 'Affliction' style shirt designs, so I thought this would be perfect for him.

Goth Pinup Girl Tattoo...

One of my closest friends has been wanting a goth style pinup girl for a long time, and last week while visiting his city, I finally did him the favor. I really dig the tattoo because its a traditional pinup done with a modern goth twist. I also really like how the background came out and how it plays against the colors of the girl. Now my friend can stop nagging me!

This young man came in the shop to get his last name blasted across his back in some graf lettering. I Love rocking pieces like this! I really like this photo also, how he's flanked by his reflection on one side and the religious painting on the other.
And this kid came in to get some nice gangster script on his arm. I really enjoyed doing this too.

My favorite holiday. Had to share my wicked skull face paint I did for a Halloween rollerskating party I attended last night with some friends. My skull face won me one of three best costume awards given out that involves a free pizza skate party. Not bad.I'm especially proud of this photo because it was taken while skating. I didn't fall, and I wasn't caught by the refs as there is a rule about no mobile phones while skating. Good job.

I was very into this praying Jesus piece because I'm a religious person, and I really enjoy doing black and gray work.
This tiger fighting a cobra was this kids first tattoo, and he sat like a champ!

My friend Mike and his wife Staci came in to get some new ink. She got the panther on her back, and he got the bulldog wearing the steelworkers helmet in tribute to his Pittsburgh roots

This guy wanted some lilly flowers with his daughters name involved so I colored the script to match the stem and he loved it!

Hot Rod Hoedown 2010...

I checked out Philly's Hot Rod Hoedown to peep some pinstriping, lettering, and wacked out customs. Daddy O's, Kitty Kats, Greasers, and all sorts of Rockabilly were everywhere.
...this guy had about 200 of these custom painted bowling pins for sale
These bikes were badass!
This rod was wicked! It was all army OD green and had sooo many badass custom touches to it! That spider web metal work and skull headlamps are too tough!
...it even had bombs attached underneath! The paintwork was pretty good also.
I dig this lettering. The font captures the spirit of 'hillbilly' perfectly
The big orange scallops on this ride looked dope. Simple, yet effective
Tiki pinstriping on the front of this car looked good with the hood ornament

My friend Alan Johnson striped this car, and I recognized his style almost immediately!
The rabbit striping design on this trunk was badass! Reminded me of Dutch's "Harvey Shaken by Crossbreeding" design from way back
I did the silver leaf 'Bone Shaker' lettering for my friend a few months ago.
This car is without question the meanest looking ride I have ever seen! It looked like something the Nazis would of built if they were hot rodders. It was chopped so much that there's only about six inches of windshield to look out of. The photo wasn't taken from a drastic angle, the car really looked just like this! This beast is no joke! Fucking wicked!

My good friend, co-worker, and master machine builder, Kevin Riley delivered a new set of machines for me! They were constructed according to my specific style and methods of tattooing. I only use disposable tubes and grips, so to correct the lack of weight and balance left by the absence of metal tubes, he created the machines lighter than most and balanced perfectly. He always includes cool or subtle touches and amazing craftsmanship in his machines and these two are no different. You've got to love the Krylon spraycan and 1Shot paint coil wraps! What else could embody my passion for tattooing, graffiti, and pinstriping like these two machines?! Thanks again Kevin for hooking me up!

I've never used watercolors, and never really had any interest to, but yesterday while at the tattoo shop, I started messing around. I did all the lining with a brush also. I liked the vibrant colors a lot!

My friend and co-worker, Kevin Riley, made me a set of badass custom tattoo machines. He adjusted the weight balance to compensate for my lightweight disposable tubes I use. They're my favorite machines I've used to date and cant wait for my second set he's building me to arrive! I really appreciate the small details such as the 'MA' stamped into the frame (Matt Atomik), and the use of a Jamaican coin as the tube key. I love them.

I striped this pickup for a friend. I decided to use green to match the interior color. I laid it out all over the interior also. I always like finding stripes on the inside where they're usually hidden unless you know they are there.

I accidentally wandered into the backstage area where a live outdoor theatre performance was being held. I didn't even know why these people were dressed in 40's attire, but I got off a few photos before I was kicked out. This pic is my favorite because the woman to the far left is holding a magazine that reads "I love bacteria"
This last photo was taken just after I was kicked out of the backstage area where the actors were. I actually wandered onto the far rear of the stage set and took this pic a moment before I was grabbed by a stage hand and directed out of the scene. I like this photo because it looks like two people are about to be abducted by an UFO.

late summer holiday...

Realizing that I hadn't done very much this summer except work on art and tattoo, I decided to take a late summer holiday trip while the weather was still beautiful. I brought my posse of hermit crabs with me and headed for the beach among other destinations...
The above photo was taken at the Norfolk Museum of Modern Art. Photography was not allowed but I got off a few pics with my cell phone...

I've just returned from my late summer vacation to find a package full of badass stickers and stuff from artist Jon Chase at DSTROYR clothing! I have been a big fan of the art and clothing he's creating for a while. What I really appreciate about his designs is that they have a unique style all their own. They're striking and simple, usually in black and white, and convey attitude and movement very effectively. I also admire the fact that his designs don't follow the same path as most other clothing brands where old english lettering and overused filigree is used to no end. While other popular clothing brands are starving for new ideas or reverting back to played out styles, DSTROYR is killing it with some of the best graphics out!

Before I left for my trip, I sent him a bunch of atomik stickers for a trade, and he responded generously! Thanks Jon, and everyone should check out his site- dstroyr.wordpress.com

I've always wanted to explore photography past basic documentation of my artwork, and this week I finally got a decent DSLR camera to do just that. I suppose you'll be seeing more "photos for the sake of photos" on this blog soon.

Above is a photo that I took long ago during my first visit to Las Vegas. When I travel to new cities, I usually visit all the landmarks that tourists typically attend to, but I also usually explore the ghetto, or run-down areas also. Because thats where I find the shit that has character, style, or attitude. And thats where I came across this dog, chilling behind the fence, with the shitty spray painted flames in the background. I took this photo with a piece of crap camera, but its still my favorite photo I've taken to date. I think what makes it is that the dog is acting like he doesn't see me. Chilling.
